In dental school we were taught patients may want to have dental work for cosmetic reasons, but aside from that we, as dentists, will be fixing teeth for two main reasons; periodontal (gum) disease and tooth decay. Over the years I have noticed there is a third reason we need to fix teeth; chipping, breaking or wearing down of the teeth. This last reason occupies about 1/3 of my practice.

Enamel is the outer hard, protective outer layer of teeth, but it is approximately 2mm or less in thickness when the tooth erupts, and gets progressively thinner over time. This causes a weaking of the tooth making it more susceptible to cavities, sensitivity, and chipping or breaking of teeth .

This patient chipped her lower front tooth because her upper front two teeth were too long, causing her to bite too hard on her lower front teeth. The lower front teeth often chip because they are the smallest, weakest teeth in the mouth.

The patient opted to do a short course of lnvisalign, in which we straightened all of her teeth, giving her a broader, more even smile, and a better bite, that places the heaviest bite forces on the back teeth where the teeth are strongest.

Straight teeth are easier to keep clean, reducing your chances of cavities or gum disease, and an ideal bite reduces excessive wear and your chances of chipping or breaking teeth. If your smile or bite are less than ideal, you can contact us at 561-627-5552 for a free consultation!
