Air Abrasion in Juno Beach, Palm Beach Gardens & Jupiter, FL
At Kuhl Dentistry, you can experience the Air Abrasion technique for fixing cavities without the need for a shot or drill!
Air Abrasion Explained
Air abrasion is a gentle, minimally invasive micro-dentistry technique used to remove early tooth decay and prepare teeth for fillings—without the noise, heat, or vibration of a traditional drill.
It works by directing a fine stream of aluminum oxide particles—similar to very fine sand—onto the tooth to precisely remove decay while preserving healthy structure. A tooth-colored filling is then placed to restore and protect the tooth.
Air abrasion also creates a micro-roughened surface that enhances bonding—"using air abrasion creates a stronger bond between almost any dental material and the tooth surface, for longer lasting restorations."
This technique is typically painless and often does not require anesthetic, allowing multiple areas to be treated comfortably in a single visit. Patients appreciate the quiet, conservative approach and the ability to maintain more of their natural tooth.
We commonly use air abrasion for small cavities, removing surface stains, and cleaning around existing restorations or crowns prior to bonding or recementation. More extensive decay, removal of old dental materials or crown shaping still requires drilling.
Air Abrasion: Gentle, Drill-Free Dentistry
Air abrasion is a conservative, minimally invasive technique used to remove smaller cavities and surface stains without the need for a traditional drill or numbing.
Instead of a drill, a fine stream of particles like aluminum oxide is directed at the tooth to gently remove decay or stains while preserving healthy structure. The process is very conservative, quiet, precise, and comfortable for most patients. It is very similar to medical microdermabrasion.
